Why do people find it odd to eat kangaroo meat, or wear kangaroo leather?

Kangaroos are not endangered in Australia - not the ones used for these purposes, anyway. They are in fact a pest, and a grazing animal just like the sheep is... They are also quite aggressive, and not very soft or cuddly. Is it just a case of lack of knowledge, or is incorrect information being put out regarding the kangaroo as an endangered species?
