Richie Sambora (guitarist of Bon Jovi) makes an awesome sound, does anyone know how he does it?

In the beginning of a couple of Bon Jovi songs, like Livin' On A Prayer and It's My Life, Richie makes this awesome sound by blowing into some weird looking thing...does anyone know what it's called or have any info about it? Thanx!!! =)
